How to Get from Newark Airport to Manhattan: Train, Taxi, Uber or Car Service

AirTrain and NJ Transit, the bus, a yellow cab, a ride app or a private car: what each one costs in money and time from Newark Airport to Manhattan, and who each option suits.

There are five realistic ways from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) into Manhattan: the AirTrain plus an NJ Transit train to Penn Station, an express bus, a yellow cab, a ride app, or a private car booked ahead. The cheapest is the train. The most predictable is a flat-fare car: $149 for a sedan or $179 for a Suburban, door to door, tolls and tip included. Here is how they compare so you can pick the one that fits your trip.

What is the cheapest way from Newark Airport to Manhattan?

The AirTrain to Newark Liberty Airport station, then an NJ Transit train to New York Penn Station. You buy one combined ticket, the AirTrain loops the terminals every few minutes, and the train ride into Penn Station is about 30 minutes. From Penn Station you still need the subway, a cab or a walk to your hotel. It is the right choice for one or two people with light bags who are headed to Midtown and are not in a hurry late at night, when trains run less often.

The express bus to Midtown (Port Authority, Bryant Park and Grand Central) is the other budget option. It is simple and runs often, but it sits in the same tunnel traffic as everyone else and still leaves you a few blocks from where you are going.

Is a taxi or Uber cheaper from Newark to Manhattan?

It depends on the hour. A yellow cab from Newark is metered, and the tolls, a surcharge and the tip are added at the end, so you only know the total when you arrive. In light traffic it can be reasonable; in rush hour the meter keeps turning while the car does not move.

A ride app gives you a number upfront, but the number is set by demand. At an airport, demand spikes exactly when several flights land together, so the quote at 9 pm after a delay can be far above the quote at 2 pm. You also walk to the ride-share pickup zone and wait for the driver to be assigned.

A private car service quotes a flat fare before you book and it does not move. Our Newark fares:

VehicleSeatsFlat fare to or from Manhattan
Black Car Sedanup to 3$149
Executive SUV (Chevy Suburban)up to 6$179
Luxury SUV (Cadillac Escalade)up to 6$209

Every fare includes tolls, the airport fee, the Manhattan congestion charge and a 15% gratuity. The only optional extra is meet-and-greet at baggage claim ($50) and child seats ($50 each, up to 3).

How long does each option take?

The door-to-door options win on time whenever you have luggage, children or a hotel that is not next to Penn Station.

How does a pre-booked car work at Newark?

We track your flight and move the pickup to the real landing time, so an early or late arrival costs you nothing. From the moment you land you have 15 minutes of free wait time, on domestic and international arrivals alike. Prefer to be met inside? Add meet-and-greet ($50) and your chauffeur waits at baggage claim with a name sign.

You text or call when you land (or simply walk out; your chauffeur is already watching the flight), collect your bags, and the car meets you at the arrivals curb of your terminal. No lot, no shuttle, no app.

Which option should you choose?
